Alcoa showcases world-leading rehabilitation
Alcoa’s biodiversity team showed off our world-leading rehabilitation earlier this month to a group from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) – an organisation responsible for the verification of sustainable aluminium production.
The tour was hosted by Biodiversity Director Andrew Grigg who took the global non-profit group through three different ages of rehabilitation at Huntly mine site.
Andrew said his team shared unique insights into Alcoa’s rehabilitation experiences from over the past 50 years.
“We were able to share our experiences in biodiversity management in the jarrah forest, including how we’re managing at-risk species, how we’re supporting restored forest in a drying climate, and the longer-term recovery of the forest ecosystem,” Andrew said.
ASI holds a leading role as the most comprehensive third-party system to verify responsible production in the aluminium industry.
The certification covers 59 indicators across the entire value chain in the areas of governance, environmental management, and social responsibility.
Not only is the certification important from an environmental perspective, but it also drives additional value with our customers as it helps them meet their own sustainability targets, as well as those of their customers.
Globally, Alcoa has 17 sites certified to the ASI standards, and we’re currently working on the recertification of 10 locations this year.
