What we produce

The aluminium production process starts at our Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines in the Darling Range south of Perth in Western Australia. Huntly is the world’s second largest bauxite mine and together with Willowdale supplies bauxite to Alcoa’s three Australian alumina refineries at Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup. The refineries extract alumina from the bauxite with the majority exported to global customers and a small amount shipped to Alcoa's Victorian smelter.

Portland Aluminium Smelter in Portland, Victoria, smelts alumina into aluminium ingots. Portland Aluminium is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia Limited (45%), Eastern Aluminium Portland Pty Ltd (10%) (a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa of Australia), CITIC Nominees Pty Ltd (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia Pty Ltd (22.5%). Alcoa manages day to day operations at the smelter.

Each year Alcoa mines approximately 38 million dry metric tonnes of bauxite, refines approximately 9.8 million tonnes of alumina and produces approximately 300,000 tonnes of aluminium.

Alcoa produces nearly 50 per cent of Australia’s alumina and approximately 19 per cent of Australia’s aluminium. Our alumina production in Western Australia accounts for approximately seven per cent of total world production.

Contributing to the Australian economy

Alcoa has been investing in Australia for 59 years. In 2021, 75 per cent of Alcoa Australia’s total revenue stayed in Australia through wages, local purchasing, taxes, royalty and dividends to Australian shareholders. We are also one of Australia’s leading exporters, contributing around $4.6 billion in exports each year.
