Alcoa Australia supports SALP biodiversity projects

The Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) continues to protect environmental biodiversity in the Swan Region, with grants of almost $275,000 recently awarded to 21 community groups across Swan, Canning and surrounding catchment areas.

The partnership between Alcoa Australia, Burswood Park Board and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), delivered by Perth NRM, has contributed more than $10 million to Swan Region communities over the past 28 years.

This year’s projects build on restoration projects already delivered by thousands of volunteers who have planted more than 3.25 million native plants, revegetated more than 3,200 hectares of land and carried out weed control across the catchment.

The Friends of the Bennett Brook received the largest share of funding, receiving nearly $20,000 to improve biodiversity and water quality in the Bennett Brook Reserve.

The Gingin Brook Catchment Group was awarded $18,045 for a project that will support the recovery of Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo Habitat in Lennard’s Brook following a bushfire.

Alcoa Australia President Elsabe Muller said Alcoa is a proud partner of SALP, which remains a regionally significant contributor to the preservation and creation of ecologically functional habitat for native fauna.

“SALP shows what can be achieved when government, industry and community work together with a longterm commitment to environmental stewardship. Alcoa is proud to be a founding partner in a program that empowers local groups and delivers lasting benefits for the Swan Region,” Elsabe said.

Minister for the Environment, Hon. Matthew Swinbourn MLC recognised the dedication of local volunteers.

“The success of this program is driven by the dedication of community groups and volunteers, whose ongoing efforts continue to enhance and restore local bushland and waterways,” said the Minister.

The 2027 round of funding is now open. Volunteer groups interested in applying for the next round of grants can find more information about the SALP program at  www.perthregionnrm.com.
