School volunteers make a big difference
EdConnect volunteers working in schools across the Kwinana, Peel and South West regions have added nearly $750,000 in value to the local community this year. About 150 volunteers provided close to 250 hours of support each week over the 2019 school year helping nearly 1,500 students across 22 primary and high schools. The support was provided through EdConnect Australia’s Connecting Generations for School Success Program, made possible through funding from the Alcoa Foundation.

Champions of Maths Graduate!
The inaugural cohort of teachers from the Alcoa Champions of Maths program are ready for graduation, having increased their confidence to teach problem solving skills in their primary maths classes by over 50%. Champions of Maths was introduced in 2019 as an extension to the successful Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program. It is expected to benefit more than 8,000 students through intensive coaching and mentoring for primary school teachers and the ‘multiplier’ effect this creates.

Alcoa continues to back female engineers with scholarships
Aspiring female engineers have the opportunity to secure financial and in-kind support thanks to resources company Alcoa, which continues to be a leader in supporting women in this non-traditional field. Alcoa is now offering another two one-year $5,000 scholarships for the 2020 academic year at Curtin with applications opening on 14 October and closing on 6 March. Students plant to protect chuditch corridor on Serpentine River
Baldivis Secondary College students rolled up their sleeves this week to start adding 1,000 plants to key wildlife habitat on the Serpentine River, at a site where chuditch (Western Quoll) have been spotted in recent years. Alcoa counted on for annual cocky survey
